Eight-year-old George from Harlow, Essex, is redefining what independence looks like for young wheelchair users. Living with Spina Bifida, George relies on a manual wheelchair at home and school. Despite this, he attends a mainstream school and leads an active life – but like many wheelchair users, he wanted more control over how he moved through the world.

The Challenge

For George and his mum, Jen, independence was always the goal. While George managed well in his manual wheelchair, he didn’t enjoy relying on others to push him – especially when he wanted to keep up with friends or explore freely. Jen explains: “We’ve always wanted George to be as independent as possible. He didn’t like having to rely on someone pushing him everywhere.” They began exploring powered add-ons as a solution – something that could give George the freedom to move independently while still using his existing wheelchair.

Finding the Right Solution

While considering options, the family spoke with Richard Chiassaro at Lifestyle & Mobility. Richard, a wheelchair user himself and a two-time Paralympian, understood George’s needs firsthand. He introduced them to the Eco Travel powered add-on from Rehasense – a lightweight, travel-friendly solution designed to enhance independence. Jen recalls: “We trust Richard 100%. He really understands what George needs, and when he recommended Eco Travel, we knew it was worth trying.”

Life with Eco Travel

After just a few months of using Eco Travel, the difference has been remarkable. George quickly adapted to the add-on and now moves around with ease and confidence: “It’s really easy to use, and it’s great not having to be pushed anymore!”. One of the biggest changes has been at the stables, where George enjoys horse riding. Previously, uneven and muddy terrain made it difficult for him to move independently – but now he can navigate the space on his own. Jen shares: “Before, George had to be pushed around the yard. Now he can go wherever he wants. Seeing that independence is incredible.”

Unlocking New Opportunities

Eco Travel hasn’t just improved day-to-day mobility – it’s opened doors to new experiences. George recently had the opportunity to try wheelchair racing, something he immediately loved. With the powered add-on, he can move around training grounds and tracks independently, building both skill and confidence. He’s even been given permission to use Eco Travel during his school sports days, something he’s especially excited about. “My teacher said I can use it on sports day – I can’t wait!”. At home, his enthusiasm is contagious: even his brother Teddy is eager to have a turn.

Expert Perspective

Richard Chiassaro, who supported George’s journey, has extensive experience in wheelchair racing and mobility solutions. His endorsement highlights the value of Eco Travel not just for George, but for a wider community of users. “The Eco Travel is a superb piece of equipment and offers incredible value for money. The range and traction control make a huge difference for users.”
